Is the smart socket really energy-saving? The measured data tells you

In today's increasingly popular smart home, smart sockets, as entry-level smart devices, are regarded as energy-saving artifacts by many consumers. However, can it really save power? Or is it just a gimmick? This article analyzes the actual energy-saving effect of smart sockets through measured data and gives an objective evaluation.

First, the working principle of smart sockets and their claimed energy-saving functions

The smart socket allows users to remotely control the power on and off through the mobile APP through the built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth module. Its claimed energy-saving functions mainly include: timing switch, remote control, power statistics and scene linkage. In theory, these functions can help users reduce standby energy consumption and avoid long-term idling of appliances, thereby achieving energy saving.

Second, the measured data: how do we test?

In order to verify the energy-saving effect of smart sockets, we selected three mainstream brands of smart sockets (A, B, C) on the market. In the same environment, a TV (standby power about 10W) and a water dispenser (thermal insulation power about 5W) were tested for one week. The test is divided into two groups: one group uses smart sockets (on timing and remote control), and the other group plugs directly into ordinary sockets as a control group. We use high-precision power meters to record daily power consumption.

Test results (average daily power consumption per week)

equipment
Smart socket group (kWh)
Control group (kWh)
Power saving (kWh)
energy saving rate
TV (standby)
0.120.170.0529.4%
Water dispenser (thermal insulation)
0.080.110.0327.3%

From the data, the smart socket can indeed significantly reduce standby energy consumption, with an energy saving rate of about 27%. But please note that this is based on the situation of turning off the power regularly every day. If the user does not set the timing or remote shutdown, the smart socket itself will also consume a small amount of power (about 0.5W-1W), and long-term accumulation may offset part of the energy saving effect.

III. Analysis of advantages and disadvantages

advantage

  • Significantly reduce standby energy consumption:
As tested above, for appliances with high standby power consumption, the energy-saving effect is obvious.
  • Convenience of remote control:
Switch appliances on and off anytime and anywhere to avoid the waste of forgetting to turn off the power.
  • Power statistics function:
Help users understand the power consumption of electrical appliances and optimize their usage habits.
  • Scene linkage:
Linkage with other smart devices to achieve automated energy conservation (e.g. automatic power failure in away from home mode).

disadvantage

  • Its own power consumption cannot be ignored.
The smart socket consumes about 0.5W-1W when standby, and if multiple are used simultaneously, it will add up to a lot.
  • Initial input cost:
The price of a smart socket ranges from 30 to 100 yuan, requiring long-term use to recover.
  • Dependent on the network:
If the Wi-Fi is unstable, the remote control may fail, affecting the user experience.
  • Not suitable for high-power electrical appliances:
Some smart sockets have limited maximum load and are not suitable for high-power equipment such as air conditioners.

IV. Comprehensive rating and recommendations

Brand model

Comprehensive score
Brand A

4.2/5
Brand B

3.5/5
Brand C

4.5/5

Recommend:
For users who pursue cost-effectiveness and basic functions, Brand A is a good choice; while Brand C has comprehensive functions and is suitable for smart home enthusiasts. Brand B has a fair performance and is not particularly recommended.

V. Suggestions for use

  • Equip appliances with high standby power consumption (such as TVs, set-top boxes, water dispensers) with smart sockets and set them to turn off regularly.
  • Avoid connecting high-power electrical appliances (e.g. electric heaters, ovens) to smart sockets to avoid overloading.
  • Regularly check the power statistics to detect devices that consume abnormal power.
  • If the Wi-Fi signal in your home is poor, choose a smart socket that supports Bluetooth or Zigbee.

VI. Conclusion

Smart sockets can indeed reduce standby energy consumption through intelligent management. The measured energy saving rate is around 27%, but it is not an "artifact". Its energy saving effect depends on the user's usage habits and settings. For households with remote control needs and high standby power consumption, smart sockets are an energy-saving tool worth investing in. However, for devices with extremely low standby power consumption, the energy saving effect is limited, and the cost recovery cycle needs to be considered. In short, smart sockets are an auxiliary means of energy saving, not a fundamental solution.

If you are considering purchasing a smart socket, it is recommended to choose the right product according to your own needs and make good use of its functions in order to truly achieve energy savings.
